(1Q)How would you describe yourself as a person and what are your hobbies?

I am active, optimistic and spiritual. My hobbies are practicing yoga, playing the piano, taking care of my two cats, reading about nutrition, and going to the gym.
(2Q)When did you thought of preparing for Miss universe pageant and any difficulties you face?

I first thought about entering the Miss Universe pageant when I was 21 years old and living in Toronto.  I was a student in my last year of university. The difficulty that I  faced was the fact that a lot of people around me didn’t believe I could  win the Miss Canada pageant  as I was an immigrant.

They thought that an immigrant (with an accent  and a Russian last name) would never be able to win such a title.  Despite that, I believed that it didn’t matter where I came from, and  thought of myself as a true Canadian who can represent my country at Miss Universe. So I went ahead and entered the pageant and to a lot of people’s surprise, won!
(3Q)Tell us about your published book Healthy Happy Beautiful and how people can get benefit by reading it.

I  wrote my book Healthy Happy Beautiful right after I passed on my title  as Miss Universe and moved to Thailand.

The book was inspired by my  journey to the crown and the year of experiences that I had traveled  the world, trying to stay in shape, and dealing with stress. During my reign as Miss Universe, I’ve learned a lot about being healthy from personal trainers, nutritionists, and health gurus, so I wanted to share all I’ve learned with my fans and people who are interested in health and wellness.

(4Q)What are your future plans?

I  am an aspiring TV show producer and business woman. My dream is to  develop my own brand of skin care products, TV shows, books, and other  products related to health, beauty and well-being.

(5Q)Did you ever felt discouraged in life and if yes, what thoughts made you recover?

When I entered my first pageant for Miss Canada,  I came in third place. I was very disappointed and discouraged but  decided to enter again the following year. It was a tough decision  especially since I had negative feedback from some people around me,  saying I didn’t win because I am an immigrant and not Canadian-born.  What made me recover and gain back the confidence to try again, was  positive thinking, and knowing that you can achieve anything you want in  life if you believe in yourself and work hard.

(6Q) Your secret of staying in top shape?

I  try to follow a balanced lifestyle. I rarely deny myself anything I  crave and believe in listening to what my body is telling me. I  exercise a lot and for that, I allow myself to eat well. But in times  when I don’t have time to exercise, I watch what I eat. There really is  no secret to staying in top shape. If you burn off what you eat, you’ll  never gain weight.

(7Q) Your normal diet (eg. generally  what do you eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner).

I’m a pescatarian, so I don’t eat meat (only seafood). I love eating a lot of nuts, grains, fruits and vegetables, and soy products. For breakfast, I usually have healthy bran or whole grain cereal with soy milk, or buckwheat porridge, or I make my own bircher muesli with yogurt. For lunch, I enjoy a cheese sandwich on a whole grain bread  or a salad of organic vegetables. And for dinner I usually go out to  eat, so I get anything that has no meat, or just grilled fish with  vegetables and brown rice.

(8Q) Your workout routine.

I  don’t have a routine, as I get bored easily. So I try to always do  different things. One day I’ll do yoga, next day I will play badminton,  another day I will take a dance class, some days I rollerblade or swim. I  even go wake boarding from time to time.  And sometimes I just go to  the gym and do the typical cardio/weight-lifting session.

(9Q)How have you motivated yourself so long to eat healthy in daily life?

What motivates me to eat well is the feeling I have when I’m healthy and at my ideal weight.  I feel light, energetic, and motivated in other aspects of my life like  work and social. I do like to indulge once in a while on sweets as I  love it so much, so I try to have 90% of my time eating well, and 10%  eating anything I want as much of it as I want.
