GPT-5.5 Is Here: OpenAI’s Smartest AI Agent Does More With Less | Pricing, Access & What’s New

OpenAI just dropped its most capable model yet, and it’s built for people who want AI that actually works, not just talks.
GPT-5.5 launched Thursday, rolling out to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers inside ChatGPT and its coding assistant, Codex. The API version is coming “very soon.”
What Makes GPT-5.5 Different?
Think of GPT-5.5 like upgrading from a GPS that needs your exact destination to one that figures out where you want to go just by watching you drive.
OpenAI President Greg Brockman described the new model as “a faster, sharper thinker for fewer tokens” meaning it delivers higher-quality results while burning less compute to get there.
In plain English: it’s more fuel-efficient and faster. That’s rare.
On Artificial Analysis’s Coding Index, GPT-5.5 delivers state-of-the-art intelligence at half the cost of competitive frontier coding models.
What Can It Actually Do?
OpenAI says GPT-5.5 excels at analyzing data, writing and debugging code, operating software, autonomous online research, creating apps, and creating documents and spreadsheets.
This isn’t a chatbot. It’s a digital employee.
Pricing Breakdown
For API developers, GPT-5.5 is priced at $5 per 1M input tokens and $30 per 1M output tokens, with a 1M context window. GPT-5.5 Pro built for higher-accuracy work is priced at $30 per 1M input tokens and $180 per 1M output tokens.
A Fast Mode option is also available, generating tokens 1.5x faster at 2.5x the standard cost.
The Bigger Picture: One Super App
OpenAI co-founders envision combining ChatGPT, Codex, and an AI browser into one unified “super app” a single service that handles enterprise work end-to-end.
Safety First
OpenAI is treating GPT-5.5’s biological, chemical, and cybersecurity capabilities as “High” under its Preparedness Framework, and conducted testing with nearly 200 trusted early-access partners before release.
Bottom line: GPT-5.5 isn’t just smarter, it’s more autonomous, more efficient, and signals where AI is clearly heading: agents that work for you, not just with you.
