Anthropic Fable 5 Offline: What Happened to Claude’s New AI Model
Three days after launching its most powerful AI model ever, Anthropic was told to pull it from the internet. Ten days later, it is still offline. Here is exactly what happened, why, and when it might come back.
What Happened
On June 12, 2026 at 5:21pm Eastern Time, Anthropic received an export control directive from the US government. The order required the company to pause access to two of its newest AI models, Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, for every foreign national worldwide. Rather than build a real-time nationality filter, which Anthropic said was technically unworkable, the company chose to take both models offline globally. All other Claude models remain available.
The Backstory
Fable 5 launched on June 9, 2026, just three days before the directive. It is built on top of Mythos 5, Anthropic’s most advanced model, with extra safeguards in place to limit access to powerful cybersecurity capabilities. Think of Mythos as the racing engine, and Fable 5 as the road-legal car wrapped around it.
The government’s concern, according to multiple reports, centred on a possible technique for getting around those safeguards. Anthropic publicly disagreed, stating that the technique in question was narrow, that other widely available models could perform similar tasks, and that the situation appeared to be a misunderstanding.
Why This Matters
The directive sits inside a much bigger picture. On June 2, 2026, the White House published an Executive Order titled “Promoting Advanced Artificial Intelligence Innovation and Security,” which set up a new framework for the government to designate certain AI models as “covered frontier models.” Fable 5 launched seven days later without a pre-brief, and the directive arrived three days after that.

There is also history between the two sides. The Pentagon labelled Anthropic a “supply chain risk” earlier this year. Anthropic is currently in litigation against that designation. President Trump and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei met at the G7 summit in France, where the President struck a more conciliatory tone, telling reporters the technology could deliver “medical cures coming up 25 years early.”
What Happens Next
Anthropic’s International Managing Director Chris Ciauri said publicly that the company is confident the models will return in the coming days. Prediction markets currently price the odds of Fable 5 returning before July 1 at 57 percent. The refund window for affected customers closed on June 20, 2026.
Bottom line: The first global pause of a frontier AI model has just happened. How it ends will shape how every government on the planet treats the next powerful model that launches.
