American-Norwegian robotics company 1X Technologies has recently showcased Neo, a $20,000 humanoid robot designed to bring general-purpose robotics into everyday households. Weighing around 30 kilograms, Neo can lift over 68 kilograms, perform household chores such as tidying, folding laundry, and organizing spaces, and even adapt its behavior based on user preferences through built-in artificial intelligence.
Equipped with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 5G connectivity, Neo communicates through a three-stage speaker system and operates quietly at just 22 decibels, which is quieter than most refrigerators. It uses an advanced large language model (LLM) to hold natural conversations and respond intelligently to voice commands. The robot’s visual intelligence allows it to identify objects, interpret surroundings, and even suggest tasks, such as recognizing ingredients on a countertop and offering recipe ideas.

Neo’s design emphasizes approachability. Its soft polymer body, dressed in neutral-colored knit fabric, and 22-degree-of-freedom hands powered by a patented Tendon Drive system make its movements smooth, safe, and human-like.
One of Neo’s most talked-about features is its Expert Mode, which allows remote human operators called “1X Experts” to guide the robot through unfamiliar tasks. While this mode ensures task completion, it raises privacy concerns, as it may require human supervisors to view parts of a user’s home during operation. The company assures users that strict controls and permissions limit this access.
Neo also incorporates memory functions, allowing it to remember personal details like birthdays, grocery lists, and past conversations. Over time, its AI updates will expand its abilities and improve autonomy.
Initially launching in the U.S. in 2026, Neo will be available through direct purchase or a $499 monthly subscription plan. With rivals like Elon Musk’s Tesla Optimus on the horizon, Neo represents a significant step forward in the rapidly evolving AI-driven robotics industry.
